ment for the CAP are the responsibility of
the Central Arizona Water Conservation
District (CAWCD), an entity created by the
Arizona State Legislature in 1971.
The CAWCD is administered by a board
of directors popularly elected from Ma'
ricopa, Pima, and Pinal Counties with the
number of board members from each
county determined by population. In
order to collect reimbursement for the
CAP, the CAWCD is charged with the sale
of Project water to non,lndian irrigators
and municipal and industrial users. The
organization collects power revenues
made available for the project and also can
levy taxes on property in Maricopa, Pima,
and Pinal Counties.
In 1982, the responsibility of the
CAWCD was expanded to incorporate the
operation and maintenance of the CAP,
including the maintenance of the existing
aqueduct, pumping plants, and micro,
wave systems. In addition to collecting
payments and remitting funds to the
federal government, the CAWCD was also
made responsible for all operations of
delivering CAP water.

de Conservaci6n de Agua de Arizona Cen-
tral (CAWCD), una entidad creada por la
Legislatura del Estado de Arizona en 1971.
El CAWCD es administrado por una
mesa directiva electa popularmente en los
condados Maricopa, Pima, y Pinal. El
m:imero de miembros de la directiva se
determina de acuerdo al m:imero de la
poblaci6n. Para colectar reembolsos del
CAP, eJ CAWCD esta encargado de la venta
del agua del CAP a irrigadores no-indios y
a los usuarios municipales e industriaies,
