<br /> <br />c'": <br />~ <br />..... <br />CO" <br /> <br />(continued) <br />ment for the CAP are the responsibility of <br />the Central Arizona Water Conservation <br />District (CAWCD), an entity created by the <br />Arizona State Legislature in 1971. <br />The CAWCD is administered by a board <br />of directors popularly elected from Ma' <br />ricopa, Pima, and Pinal Counties with the <br />number of board members from each <br />county determined by population. In <br />order to collect reimbursement for the <br />CAP, the CAWCD is charged with the sale <br />of Project water to non,lndian irrigators <br />and municipal and industrial users. The <br />organization collects power revenues <br />made available for the project and also can <br />levy taxes on property in Maricopa, Pima, <br />and Pinal Counties. <br />In 1982, the responsibility of the <br />CAWCD was expanded to incorporate the <br />operation and maintenance of the CAP, <br />including the maintenance of the existing <br />aqueduct, pumping plants, and micro, <br />wave systems.
