Between Pueblo and the John
Martin Reservoir J:lood damages are estimated by the corps of ~gineers
to average $890,000 annually; the Fryingpan-Arkansaa Project through
construction of Pueblo Reservoir and other upstream works could

: ~,

eliminate about 66 percent of the probable fll)O(i damage in this,

reach.

The Arkansas River at Pueblo annuaJ.:J.y transports about 944

acre-feet of sediment. Approximately 42 percent of that sediment
is deposited in reservoirs, canals and laterals, adding materially

to the operation and maintenance expense, about 38 percent becomes,

'"
"

an undesirable deposition on irrigation lands. Deposition in the

river channel ,and headworks has made some irrigation diversion

structures inop",rative, others have been raised. Removal and
disposal of sediment is an increasingly serious and costly
problem. Deposition of the sediment in Pueblo 'Reservoir, 1n'
space provided for that purpose, will reduce the difficulties

.,
?..~

~:

y

of water users from the river below the reservoir.

,,'

6

~>;.

"-';".

",,',
"','

."....
'.',','
"';"

,....:..

.;.
~,," .

;;;D$;i3:[;~;~~li;!~{;~i~;li}';;;ijgfi.!~ilii(.lii,11iiBi;j)'i;~';~;:;;t~JM~)1f.';;;~ii.i!5.ftii~1~rtS::i?{.1itj~~10(i;:;gSf.\;~2D/"{\{it:t::;:;f"&%g;;}~};i;;t;';~}it~;
