After introductions of meeting attendees a progression of CDOW concerns was presented
which now include, water quantity issues, water quality issues, and terrestrial issues
associated with a project in the Arkansas River basin. Then an overview of the modeling
process was given which will include monthly modeling of quantity and quality as well as
daily exchanges. Next a presentation of the background of the Technical and Environmental
Studies was presented and each storage alternative was discussed individually to determine
the issues of concern for the CDOW.
2. Lake Meredith Enlargement-
. Water exchanges made by Colorado Springs will most likely include delivering water
from Lake Meredith and subsequently taking water from Pueblo Reservoir which will
cause a reduction in the quantity of water in the Arkansas River from below Pueblo
Reservoir to the inlet of Lake Meredith. This action will most likely cause water
quantity problems for the Sucker Mouth Minnow, which is found below Rocky Ford
and John Martin Reservoir. This fish is currently on the state endangered species list
and a plan is being formed to keep it from getting on the federal list. The Sucker Mouth
Minnow requires a constant flow; it does not mind turbid waters but does need riffles.
Any change in sediment deposition could disturb the riffles and be a threat to this fish.
There are possibilities of hatchery recovery for the Sucker Mouth Minnow.
. There are no Least Terns or Piping Plovers in this area. However, the creation of sandy
beaches in Lake Meredith could attract Plovers.
. The Flathead Chub is found above John Martin Reservoir, although it is not currently
on the federal list of endangered species but it is disappearing from the Arkansas River.
