0)
:v
-
......
, .

Water is turned out from CAP system to
agnculture district

Havasu Pumping Plant, the project's largest, lifts
the water from Lake Havasu to the Buckskin Moun-
tains Tunnel inlet, 824 feet above the lake's surface,
The water then flows 7 miles through the tunnel to
the first section of canal.

As the water flows through the system to its desti-
nation, it is controlled by check structures, and car-
ried under rivers and major washes by inverted
siphons, or buried pipes, Turnouts deliver the water
to user distribution systems, The Santa Rosa Canal,
the largest distribution facility on the project, delivers
water to one Indian reservation and two of the
State's largest irrigation districts, It will also deliver
water to additional users in the future,

The first 17 miles of the Granite Reef Aqueduct, or
Reach 1, playa specific role in the project's opera-
tion, This oversized section of canal, between the
Havasu and Bouse Hills pumping plants, acts as an
in-line storage reservoir. Because the Havasu plant
will use about one-half of all the energy needed for
project pumping, it will be operated primarily when
energy costs are lowest to reduce pumping costs,
The water will then be pumped through the rest of
the system as demand requires,

Operators control
and mOnitor system

Operating and Controlling
the System

The CAP's operating features - the pumping
plants, check structures, and turnouts - are oper-
ated from the project operations and maintenance
center in north Phoenix by a computerized control
and communications system,

Communications cables buried along the aque-
duct carry operating commands from the control
center's computer to check structures and turnouts,
The commands raise or lower gates in these struc-
tures so water can be moved through the system or
delivered to users,

A line-of-sight microwave system is used for oper-
ating the pumping plants, Commands are sent from
the control center over the microwave system to
pump units at the plants, starting and stopping them
as needed,

The communications systems also carry informa-
tion from the operating features back to operators at
the control center, The operators, who plan system
operations, also monitor the system's performance
and adjust it as necessary, and correct problems
that may occur, The microwave and cable systems
can be used interchangeably to operate the project
features, If this remote operations capability is tem-
porarily lost, each individual operating feature can
be operated manually,
