~
~
~
~

FOREWORD

This report presents the results of reconnaissance investigations of
the Upper Gunnison project conducted by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1962
and 1963. The investigations were undertaken to evaluate the potentiali-
ties for water resource developments in the Upper Gunnison River Basin in
the light of new economic criteria and recent reclamation developments in
the basin, particularly the Curecanti unit of the Colorado River Storage
project now under construction just downstream from the project area. The
investigations were made in cooperation with the Colorado Water Conserva-
tion Board, the Colorado River Water Conservation District, and the Upper
Gunnison River Water Conservancy District.

Construction work in progress .on Curecanti unit.

This report appraises three of many development possibilities in the
Upper Gunnison Basin as a basis for indicating whether detailed feasibil-
ity investigations would be warranted. The plans appraised are for a com-
prehensive, an intermediate, and a small development as outlined in Chap-
ters IV, V, and VI, respectively. The comprehensive development would
serve the East River, Ohio Creek, Tomichi Creek, Cochetopa, and Gateview
areas of the Upper Gunnison River Basin. The other two plans are for
development in the East River, Ohio Creek, and Tomichi Creek areas.
