<:1.)
In
LI1
~

CHAPTER vII

CONCLUfoIONS

The following conclusions have been drawn from the reconnaissance in-
vestigations summarized in the preceding chapters,

1. Feasibility investigations are warranted of a multiple-purpose
project in the Upper Gunnison River Basin, It would be preferable for the
investigations to be made of the entire basin rather than of individual
unit developments such as outlined in the Bureau of Reclamation's 1951
reconnaissance report, Feasibility investigations for the comprehensive
development would require a period of about 5 years,

2, The optimum scale of irrigation development cannot be determined
without further consideration of potential full service lands, particular-
ly the suitability of such lands for irrigation and the practicability of
developing them into new farm units. Feasibility investigations should be
started with a study of a small representative area of presently unirri-
gated lands and the findings for that area used as a basis for determining
the scale of irrigation development for detailed study, If study of the
representative area showed development of new farm units to be impracti-
cal, investigations should then be centered on a small irrigation develop-
ment on the order of that outlined in Chapter VI, Study of the representa-
ti ve area would require about a year.

3, Costs of the project power development as now analyzed could not
be paid in 50 years if power were transmitted over the Colorado River
Storage project system and sold at the present storage project rates, The
desirability of including power as a project purpose should be reconsid-
ered in future project studies.

4. Fish and wildlife conservation and recreation would be important
purposes of the project, and cooperative planning for these purposes with
the agencies responsible should be continued,

49
