OOij133

At present, there is a research and archeological salvage contract
with the University of Colorado for students to do field work
during the summer months in various parts of the park, This
contract will be in effect for 12 more years. The students are now
housed at the Spruce Canyon headquarter3; this central location
also serves as their base of operations. As the salvage work is
extended into the more remote sections of the park,
semipermanent camps may be set up within the road less areas to
conserve travel time. Retention. possibly expansion of the
management road system is necessary for these archeological
activities.

Conclusion
The National Wilderness Preservation System was created to
protect and maintain those areas "... where the earth and its
community of life are untrammeled by man. . ," and ". , , with the
imprint of man's work substantially unnoticeable. . , ." In contrast,
Mesa Verde National Park was established to "... provide
specifically for the preservation from injury or spoilation of the
ruins and other relics of prehistoric or primitive man within said
park. . .." Thus, the u,:es, administration, and purposes of Mesa
Verde National Park preclude the suitability of any portion of it
for wilderness designation. Nevertheless, large sections of the park
shall continue to be managed with the least possible intrusion of
contemporary man's works.

ANALYSIS OF THE RECORD OF PUBLIC H::ARING AND
WRITTEN RESPONSES

Endorsing Public Agencies and Organizations' Recommendation
The following Colorado public agencies and organizations endorsed
the National Park Service recommendation of no wilderness:

State of Colorado Game, Fish and Parks Commissioner.
Southwest District

State of Colorado, Department of Highways

Ute Mountain Tribal Counci I

20
