I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
-I

I
I
.
I
"~I
I

'Irjl /', :
l "
.f." '.'

\\

" \
lDIlke a lo-year comm1 tment to reduce winter drainage pumping of

\ I

hi~ saline water accordingJS./ PreJ1 m1nA""Y studies indicate that

the peak sa.l1nity of Colorado River water under such an operation

would be slightly below 2,000 ppm. This proposal offers the most

economical and :lJmnediate method of significantly 1JIIproving the

quality of winter flows in the Colorado River. It could be used

independently or in conjunction with any of the proposals that
follow.

-

As a result of studies made to date, it is recommended that a

three-phase construction and operational program be undertaken on

the Lover Colorado River, as outlined below.

Phase 1 provides the most feasible method (other than the

increased cotton a1J.otments) of reducing the peak salt concentration

in water delivered to Mexico during the low flow winter months, end

would be accomplished through selective deep well drainage pumping

in the Wellton-Mohawk area. To a1J.eviate the situation by October

1963, we proposed to utilize, with modifications, the existing Wellton-

Mohan -dJ: a.in&.tse ,:J.a.uucl, ..UU<l L 6,-e:X::l:st1ng-ara:tns;ge-ve1.ls, annan

additional 25 new drainage wells and related collection system to

be constructed under a crash program as soon B.B funds are ava1l8ble.

With a total of 92 wells of varying quality, there would be sufficient
selectivity so that we:Lls could. be pumped in a manner to vs;ry the
quality of drainage water according to the quantity of water ava1lable

in the Colorado River for dilution. In other \lOrds, only we:Lls of

better quail ty would be pumped during the winter months when there

is low flow in the Colorado River, yet sut'ficient total ground. water

pumping would. be continuing within the District so as to prevent

11
