The stream varies from about elevation 5,800 at Morrison

to 7,000 at Evergreen and slopes about 120 feet per mile. Elevations

of the foothills between Morrison and Evergreen range as high as 8,500

feet with the average watershed elevation in this reach being about

7,600. Several ditches, .pipel ines and wells .take .water.fromthis

.
reach, however, all are junior to the senior Evergreen right.

The stream slopes about 50 feet per mile between Morrison and

the mouth and is characterised by a combination of urban development

and agricultural use. Mt. Carbon Dam has recently been constructed

below Morrison for flood control purposes. Most of the large irrigation

ditches are located in this reach and these have historically diverted

substantial quantities of water. The McBroom Ditch, the most senior

right in the watershed, is located about 1.7 miles upstream from the

mouth of Bear Creek. During the summer irrigation season, this reach

receives substantial return flows from irrigation diversions by the

ditches in the watershed as well as from domestic irrigation water

taken from sources outside the basin. The major supply to these ditches

is from Bear Creek runoff originating above Morrison, local rain,

some tributary flow, primarily Turkey Creek, and the return flow from

irrigation activities and other urban uses. <

,.
.
i ,.
,
i
,.
;.
! Records

of discharge for Bear Creek at the mouth at Sheridan, have been kept

continuously and published by the U.S.G,S. since March, 1927. Some

unpublished stage data for summer months has been kept for Bear Creek

above Evergreen, however, because of the lack of a current stage-discharge

table at the gage site this gage was not used. Evidence indicates

that the gage site above Evergreen has experienced shifting control

which could greatly affect the accuracy of discharge measurements.

Also, the gage has never been rated for flows as low as those which

occurred in August and September of 1978.

-13-
