The Paon1a Dam and Reservoir as constructed by the U. S. Bureau of
Reclamaticn differs :('rom the plan given in Senate Document No. 61 (80th
co~ss, 1st Session) as follows:

, -'( 1). The dam was resited fioom a location on East Muddy Creek just below
Spring Creek to Muddy Creek near its mouth, as shqvn on chart 1. This new
location increased the drainage area above the dam by adding West Muddy '.
Creek IlJld several SDBller creeks.

(2) The reservoir st~ capacity was increased :('ran 14,000 acre-feet
to 21,000 acre-feet.

(3) The outlet capacity vith water surface at spillway crest was in-
creased from 300 to 1,200 c. f. s. The spillway capaCity under maximum oper-
ating conditions was increased fioCIII 10,000 to 12,600 c.f.s.

b. Paon1a ram is a zoned earth and rockfill dam vith a maximum height
of 170 feet above the original streambed. The crest of the dam at elevation
6,460 feet is 770 feet long and 35 feet vide. The embanlcm!!nt is constructed
of three zones: an ,imperviOUS central zone, flanked by a perViOUS zone both
upstream and downstream, and a miscellaneous zone in the, upstream and down-
stream toes. The total volume of the embanloDent is 1,302,000 cubic yards.
A cutoff trench is provided under the impervious zone. The general plan and
sections of the dam are show on chart 6.

c. The spillwy structure is in the right abutment of the dam. It is
of side_channel type, and has an uncontrolled level crest overnow section
of ogee profile, and a rectangular concrete downslope channel tenn1nating
in a stilling basin. The spill_y crest (elevation 6447.5 ft. ) is 209 feet
long, and is L-shaped. The rectangular downslope channel is 471 feet long,
and varies in II1dth :('rom 30 to 42 feet. The stilling basin is 196 feet vide.
A bridge With a 12-foot roadwy Width carries a service road across the spill_
\BY. The IIBXimum spillway discharge capacity is 12,600 c.f.s. (at elevation
6454.1). The plan, profile, and sections of the sp1l1wyare shovn on chart
7, and the spiUwy discharge curve is shown on chart 8.

d. The outlet =rks originate at an intake tCT"",r \lith sill elevation
6,358.0 feet above mean sea level. The to'W'er directs flov into an ll-foot
diameter pressure tunnel, upstream from t= 2' 9" by 2' 9" high-pressure
slide gates, each guarded by a similar gate for emergency closure. Dovn-
stream :('rom the gates is a 10' 6" by 10' 6" flat-bottc:rned free-flow tunnel
,
constructed at a slope of 0.03466 foot per foot. At its outlet end the tun-
nel discharges into the same stilling basin used for the spillwy. The plan
and prOfile of the outlet yorks are shovn an chart 7, outlet diSCharge curves
are shown an chart 9. The rating curve for Muddy Creek below Paonia ram is
shown on chart 10, and the rating curve for North Fork Gunnison River near
Somerset is shown on chart 11.

10
