The cl1DBte of the Muddy Creek Basin is characterized by cold win- <br />ters and hot 8UD1111ers. Temperatures in the ~a generally vary inversely <br />with the elevation. For instance, at Paonia (elev. 6,125 ft.) and Cr@sted <br />Butte (elev. 8,950 ft.) observed temperature extremes are 100 and -31 de- <br />grees, and 95 and -43, respectively.
