r-

'-,'

..~

Grass Valley Ditch

Grass Valley Ditch has, in the past, been out of service

frequently due to breaks. Most of these have occurred at three

locations where the side-hill is sliding slowly, carrying the

canal with it. All three slides a~pear to be the result of

disintegration and slipping of shale strata, caused, probably,

by the softening and lubricating effect of seepage from the

ditch, aggravated no doubt by the entrance of surface water

through the cracks which are constantly opening as sliding

takes place.

It is proposed to stabilize all three slide areas. At

the upper and lower slides it is proposed to install flexible

steel pipe on temporary wooden supports across the areas. It

is believed that this will prevent entrance of water to the

shale strata and result eventually in stopping the slides.

The pipe would be laid only slightly below canal grade and

would be jacked up at intervals as required to compensate for

the settlement of the slide area. ~t the central slide, a

41

3#.
