This lease should be acquired.

Total production since 1931 has been 11,875 tons, of which 1,190

tons were mined in 1939, Such mines are common in the Hogback

over a distance of many miles, as a mine can be opened up almost

anywhere in that formation at small expense. The coal is of fair

quality.

Total estimated cost of acquiring all land, improvements and

coal rights required in the reservoir is ~60,000.

The reservoir would flood about four miles of roads, principal

of which is the highway leading from the Rifle-Meeker road through

Rifle Gap to Rifle State Park on East Rifle Creek. A second minor

highway leaves this road at the head of the Gap and leads up West

Rifle Creek. The relocated state Park Highway would cross Rifle

Creek about one mile below the dam, climb the east side of the

Cap to the top of the dam and continue on the east side of the

reservoir just above high-water level for a distance of about two

miles where it would cross East Rifle Creek and join the present

road. The West Rifle Creek Road would leave the new main road

61
