<br />CJ <br />~'" <br />...~ <br /> <br />Apparently floods originating in the drainage area above <br /> <br />Rifle Gap are of a minor nature. This is probably due to the <br /> <br />Grand Hogback which rises to heights of 7500 to 9000 feet on <br /> <br />the south and west boundaries of the area and protects it from <br /> <br />the worst StOrolS, which usually come up the Colorado River <br /> <br />Valley from the west and southwest. <br /> <br />Data secured from ditch companies on the cost of repairing <br /> <br />headgates and diversion dams showed that this expense for the <br /> <br />past 20 years has not exceeded $200 per year on the average. <br /> <br />Replacement was usually accomplished in a few days so that there <br /> <br />was no loss of crops due to interruption in diversions. The <br /> <br />State!s records of ditch diversions for the past 10 years <br /> <br />corroborate this. <br /> <br />Evidence collected from farmers indicates that loss of crops <br /> <br />by floods has not exceeded ~100 per year on the average. There <br /> <br />has been no loss of livestock. Residents along the stream say <br /> <br />that damage to bridges and roads has been of a minor nature and <br /> <br />injury to building negligible. <br /> <br />56 <br />
