CHAPTER IV

PLAN FORMULATION

The dam would be a rolled earthfill structure with a volume of
4,600,000 cubic yards. It would rise 215 feet above the streambed and
have a crest length of 1,600 feet. The spillway would have a capacity
of 4,850 second-feet at maximum water surface elevation of 7,120 feet.
The outlet works would be capable of discharging 100 second-feet.

Thornburgh Reservoir

Thornburgh Reservoir on Milk Creek would have a capacity of 36,000
acre-feet and a surface area of 840 acres at normal water surface eleva-
tion 6,716 feet. About 30,000 acre-feet of the capacity would be active
and 6,000 dead and inactive.

Thornburgh Dam would be a rolled earthfill structure that would rise
129 feet above the streambed. The crest would be 755 feet long. The res-
ervoir spillway would be an uncontrolled overflow concrete structure on
the left abutment of the dam. It would have a capacity of 3,100 second-
feet with the reservoir at maximum water surface elevation 6,724 feet.
The outlet works, also on the left abutment, would be capable of releas-
ing 160 second-feet with the reservoir at water surface elevation 6,675
feet.

North Fork Diversion Dam

The North Fork Diversion Dam would be a reinforced concrete struc-
ture having an uncontrolled overflow weir, a conduit headworks, a sluice-
way, and fish screens. The weir would be 8.5 feet high and 50 feet wide
and would be designed to pass a flood flow of 3,200 second-feet. The
headworks of reinforced concrete would be controlled by an electrically
operated radial gate.

.

Oil Shale Diversion Dam

The Oil Shale Diversion Dam would be a reinforced concrete struc-
ture including a conduit headworks, sluiceway, and an uncontrolled over-
flow weir. It would have a headworks capacity of 85 second-feet. More
details On this structure are not available, pending feasibility d~_ ign
studies.

Milk Creek Diversion Dam and Canal

The Milk Creek Diversion Dam would be a reinforced concrete struc-
ture including a canal headworks, a sluiceway, and an uncontrolled over-
flow weir. The weir would be 9 feet high and 25 feet wide at the crest
and would have a design flood capacity of 880 second-feet. The headwo~ks
Hould be of reinforced concrete, with flows to the canal controlled by a
cast-iron slide gate. .
