.

BASALT PROJECT

PROJECT PLAN, FEATURES, AND COSTS

,'" " ,'''' ,""'.
kLi (..,:':J

excavation would be COll'J'non. Culverts, turnouts, siphons, and measuring
devices would be provided as required.

Sopris Canal

The Sopris Canal would extend southeast 8.3 miles from the outlet
of the Roaring Fork siphon on the Carbondale Canal to its terminus at
West Sopris Creek. Its capacity of 25 second-feet would be utilized to
convey project water to lands in the Sopris area. The canal would con-
sist of open earth section except for about 0.4 mile of bench flume or
closed conduit along the face of steep sandstone cliffs. Only minor
clearing would be necessa~J. The major portion of the canal excavation
would be in reddish sandy clay loam where no lining wou~d be required.

Farm laterals

.

New farm laterals would be constructed to serve lands that will
receive a full water supply from the project. New laterals lfOUld also
be constructed or existing laterals enlarged as necessary to carry sup-
plemental project water to lands now irrigated. In the absence of a
definite determination of project lateral requirements, general lateral
costs per acre of land served have been estimated.

Land drains

Nearly all of the project lands have good natural drainage, but
construction of some drains may be necessary on small depressed areas.
Drains may also be required to prevent aggravation of adverse drainage
conditions on small areas of nonproject lands receiving return flow from
project irrigation. Project drainage requirements have not been analyzed
in detail, so that a unit cost per acre of project land was estimated for
project analyses.

Estimated Project"Costs

Construction costs

.

The construction cost of the Basalt project is estimated at
$17,545,000, including $1,885,000 of the cost of the Huedi Dam and Res-
ervoir as explained in the introduction to this volume. Tile remaining
costs ($15,660,000) were estimated at prices as of January 1962. Except
for farm laterals and drains, the estimates have been based on reconnais-
sance designs, including alignment and layout dralrings, and estimated
construction quantities and unit prices. Laterals were estimated at $90
per acre for full service land and $20 per acre for s11,pplemental service
land. Project drainage costs were estimated at $25 per acre of project
land, rounded to a total of $510,000. The following estimate itemized

10
