New industrial or mining operations shall be located ne3r <br />other compatible land uses, or <br /> <br />b. The location is necessary because of specific circumstances <br />such as location of minerals, atmospheric conditions, <br />transportation or geologic conditiors. <br /> <br />c. In a letter to the Public Lands Subcommittee of the U.S. Congress <br />dated August 4, 1979, Mayor W. Mitchell, of Crested Butte stated, <br />"It is our firm belief that wilderness designation should reflect <br />both local and National needs. In the case of the roadless areas <br />surrounding Crested Butte, wilderness designation clearly serves <br />this dual purpose by providing critical resource protection for a <br />nationally recognized area." <br /> <br />"The current economy of Gunnison County is a careful balance <br />between recreation, ranching and education ... This renewable <br />economy is highly dependent on the values wilderness provides - <br />pristine watersheds, scenic vistas, wildlice, etc." <br /> <br />7 <br />
