<br />) <br /> <br />deployed around dams in the Columbia River alone over the past four <br />years. <br /> <br />To accomplish this objective. radio transmitters were implanted in 11 <br />sub-adult and adult Colorado squawfish in 1996 and 12 in 1997. Fish <br />that had shown an affinity for the lower Gunnison River were used <br />first. Fish from the plunge pool and from the 2.3-mile reach received <br />the highest priority for radio-tag implantation. Since not enough fish <br />could be captured from the Lower Gunnison River. fish from stream <br />reaches in the Colorado River up- and downstream from the Gunnison <br />River confluence were implanted with radiotags, translocated to the <br />Lower Gunnison River and released immediately downstream of the <br />Redlands Diversion Dam both in 1996 and 1997. Antennae deployed in the <br />fishway entrance, at two different locations within the fishway (mid. <br />way and top), immediately up- and downstream of the fishway, and at two <br />locations downstream of the fish passageway (at about river mile 2.4 <br />and 1.4) detected the location of radiotagged Colorado squawfish. <br /> <br />Radiotagged Colorado squawfish that successfully negotiate the fishway <br />and that are captured in the fish trap will be placed upstream of the <br />fish passageway and tracked manually by boat. Searches for radiotagged <br />,fish will include the 15. and 18-mile reaches of the Colorado River. <br /> <br />1998 Work (added in 1998) <br /> <br />Up to five sub-adult and adult Colorado squawfish will be implanted <br />with radio transmitters in the spring and early-summer of 1998. <br />Priority will be to radiotag fish that have ascended the Redlands fish <br />passageway. The assumption is that the radiotagged fish behave <br />similarly to other unradiotagged squawfish released upstream of the <br />dam. If enough Colorado squawfish are not captured in the passageway <br />fish trap, sub-adult and adult squawfish will be captured with <br />electrofishing from the Redlands Diversion Dam plunge pool and Lower <br />Gunnison River downstream of the dam, radiotagged. and translocated <br />upstream of the dam. These fish will be released upstream of the dam, <br />probably at Whitewater (RM 15). These 'fish would be tracked by boat <br />through the spawning season. Semi-permanent, land-based tracking <br />stations located at the Redlands Diversion Dam and one downstream <br />station in the Lower Gunnison River would verify if any radiotagged <br />fish passed over the dam. <br /> <br />If radiotagged fish congregate near spawning time, intensive sampling <br />of the area with trammel nets and electrofishing will be conducted to <br /> <br />Redlands 9 <br />
