As a result of topographic changes, the local climate
exhibits large variations within short distances, with increases in precipitation and
decreases in tanperature fran southwest to northeast.

Average annual precipitation varies fran less than 10 inches in the southwestern
comer of ~ntezt.UIla COLmty to about 20 inches in the northeast. Precipitation varies
fran year to year, but on the average Jtme is the driest part of the year and July
through October is the wettest. The remaining nxmths are fairly tmifonn. Afternoon
showers cannxmly occur during July through mid-September, occasionally reaming
thlmder stonn intensity. Damaging stonns and other severe weather conditions are
infrequent. The average annual precipitation for the Dove Creek area is approximately
13 inches.

.

The typically clear skies and high solar radiation, canbined with the elevation
of the area, result in wann days and cool nights during the spring, SUIIlller, and fall.
The days are also canfortably wann during the winter, but the nights are quite cold.
Maximum daytime temperatures vary fran about 32-40. F. in Jarrua~ to 80-90. F. in
July, with corresponding nightime minimums ranging fran nearly 0 F. to arOlIDd 50. F.
Extreme high temperatures of over 100. F. have been recorded twice in Cortez, and
extreme low temperatures have dropped below _25. F. The frostfree period varies fran
about 100 to 120 days in the Dove Creek area.

Soils

The soils in the DOITe Creek full service area, are presently dry fanned, in
reddish hued wind blown deposits. The surface textures are loam or very fine
sandy loam with light clay loam subsoils and little or no profile development.

'1:../ Latest Bureau of Reclamation update shows a slight acreage revision fran Table A.

-5-
