co
0')
~

~ 20 -

The addition of land to present units would seem to be feasible if operators

wish to do so. Nel, land which is to come under the project as proposed is scattered

in several different locations, and most of the existing ranches in the area have

some potential new project lands located within one to ten miles of them. For

instance, Dixon and Savery are located four miles apart, and quite a number of ranch

operators live in or near each of these communities. The Dolan Mesa area is situated

along the hiphway connectinp them. Much of the additional project lands lies to the

south and west or the town of Bag~s and near to a number of ranch headquarters 10-

cated along the Snake River bottomlands.

The present investment in buildings and improvements on existing ranches would

be very nearly adequate for the operation of additional project lands. Additional

fencing and perhaps stock-watering facilities would be necessary on new oroject lands.

Grain stora~e, feedlots, and feed processing and handling equipment would also be

required if the feeder enterprise were added, but few other additional improvements

would be required.

Ranches in the project area are presently well equipped with trucks, tractors,

and other farm machinery adequate to handle a fairly large haying job in about a 40-

day time period from mid-July to the first of September. Ranches presently producing

alfalfa hay and small grains have use for their farm equipment both earlier and

later in the year, but still an excess of machine capacity exists on many ranches

for work in the early part of the vear and also in September. Practically all of

the machinery requirements on small grains are in April and May except harvesting,

and machinery requirements for alfalfa can be spread from mid-June to mid-July and

from mid-August to mid-September. Consequently, a substantial acreage of project

lands devoted to small grains and alfalfa production could be handled by existing

ranch operators with very little investment in additional machinery and equipment.
