COLORADO RIVER RECOVERY PROGRAM
FY 97 ANNUAL PROJECT REPORT

RECOVERY PROGRAM
PROJECT NUMBERCAP-6-HYD

Title: 1997 Bottomlands Floodability Assessments: the Green River in Utah and the
Colorado and Gunnison rivers in Colorado

Project Summary: The project goal was to conduct bottomland site surveys and
fIoodability assessments at four Green River Bottomland Sites near Jensen, Utah, two
Gunnison River bottomland sites nearWhitewater, CO, and two Colorado River bottomland
sites near Clifton, CO. The f100dability analysis consisted of: a determination of the current
annual frequency and mechanism of bottomland flooding, an assessment of whether it is
possible to restore historic (pre-water resources development) frequency of flooding to the
sites and the measures required to restore historic frequency. Hydrographic data were
collected, including cross section surveys, discharge measurements, and water surface
elevations were collected throughout 1997 to develop stage/discharge measurements
and/or a hydraulic model to assess the f100dability of each site. In addition, topographic
surveys were performed for each site and maps created. These maps along with flooding
information were passed along to the land acquisition project leader for use in negotiating
easements or purchasing property.

Carryover work from 1996 was also conducted. Levee removal construction activities
proceeded at three Green River Bottomland sites near Vernal, Utah. Construction
inspection, as-built surveys, and scour and deposition monitoring activities were performed
at these sites throughout 1997. Also, the "Green River Floodplain Habitat Investigation,
Bureau of Land Management Sites and Ouray National Wildlife Refuge Sites, Near Vernal,
Utah" report was drafted, reviewed by the peer and biology committees, revised and
completed by September 1997.

Study Schedule: 1995-0ngoing

Relationship to RIPRAP: This study addresses the following RIPRAP tasks:

General Recovery Program Support
II.
