Denver Water Department
July 27, 1978
Page 4

When probed about their knowledge of and opinions on

the Denver Water Baord, respondents showed a general lack

of familiarity but an overall favorable attitude toward the

Board. Responding to a question on whether they felt the

Board was sensitive to the needs of Denver water users,

76 percent agreed and only 19 percent disagreed. The
Board's policies were found to be adequate by 46 percent
and 38 percent found them inadequate.

The survey asked respondents to indicate whether,

at a hypothetical public hearing, they would be most likely

to have faith in water use plans presented by the City

Council, the Water Board or the Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA). Ten, percent chose the City Council, 43

percent the Water Board and 38 percent the EPA.
Lack of familiarity with the Water Board was evident

in respondents' replies to questions on Board activity

and compensation.

Forty-four percent believed that Board

members were fulltime, paid members and 59 percent believed

members were paid more than $10,000 a year for their services.
In fact, the City Charter restricts their compensation to $600

per year and requires them to hold twice-monthly public meetings.

Board members devote considerable additional time as a

community service.
