INTRODUCTION

Successful recovery of the endangered fishes of the Green
River, Utah, will depend upon availability of adequate habitat in
which these fishes can complete their life cycles. Recovery
Implementation Program (RIP) participants are convinced that this
will require re-establishment of naturally flooded bottomland
areas along the river. All of the historic floodplain is either
in Federal, State, Tribal, or private ownership. Permission has
already been given to utilize bottomland areas owned by Federal
and state agencies. The use of Tribal floodplain areas is
negotiable. Privately owned flooded habitats will require
easements or purchase.

The RIP has requested information on land ownership within
the historic Green River floodplain. The greatest concentration
of bottomland areas lies between Pariette Draw and Split Mountain
(Irving and Burdick 1995). These bottomland habitats are
important because of their proximity to Razorback sucker
(Xyrauchen texanusl and Colorado squawfish (Ptychocheilus luciusl
spawning sites and in providing potential nursery areas.

This report, assembled by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
(Service) and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (Division) in
Vernal, Utah, contains the most current and accurate information
available at the time of its compilation. Its purpose is to
provide the RIP's bottomland restoration program with information
for land acquisition and development of wildlife easements.

STUDY AREA

The study area (Figure 1) included the Green River and
adjacent floodplains between Pariette Draw and Split Mountain,
Dinosaur National Monument (rm 240-319 [rk 386.2-513.8]).

METHODS

The information in this report was primarily gathered from
land ownership records on file in the Office of the Recorder,
Uintah County, Utah (Recorder). It was assumed these records were
the most current, accurate and legally valid documents available.

Initial searches began with the Natural Resource
Conservation Service (NRCS) office in Vernal, Utah. This office
provided lists of all landowners registered under their
conservation, crop and irrigation assistance programs. Aerial
photographs delineating ownership of the river floodplain between
pariette Draw and Split Mountain were provided by this office.
ownership and acreage were verified with deed and easement
records in the Recorder's office. Corrections were made to NRCS
records where necessary.

1
