<br />The Colorado Department of Nljtural R!!sources has completed the '
<br />draft summary report on the Upper co10rado Riyer Basin. water.,'assess,.,
<br />ment for Q11 shale and gasification development. The study was
<br />undertaken under the authoritY of Section 13(a} of the Federal Non-
<br />nuclear Energy Research and~ve+opment Act Qf 197.4 (P.~. 93,.,577).

<br />The report is being done byfhe Colorado, Department of Natural
<br />Resources under contract to ~he U. S. Water Resources Council. An
<br />interagency State-Federal CO\lllllittee provided information, coordina-
<br />tion and guidance throughout the study and report preparation.
<br />
<br />A briefing for Federal agenC:\;es will be held in Denver on December 18.
<br />Two public workshops on th~ .findings are also planned. One will be
<br />held in Grand Junction, Colorado, on January 8, 1980, and the other
<br />" -":JII -'.
<br />in Denver on January 10, 1980. .

<br />Following the workshop~, Wat~r Resources Council staff ~il1 prepare
<br />a Draft report which will appear in the Federal Register. There will
<br />be a 90-day comment period . "The" final Council rep'ort and public com-
<br />mentswill be given to the ~retarY of ~nergy fot use by t~at
<br />Department.

<br />Since the Upper Colorado River Basin area has such a high potential
<br />for development of synthetic 'fuels, which would substantially add
<br />to pressures on the area's wa,t61r resources, the Council staff is
<br />exploring the need to maintain a continuing assessment .process in the
<br />area. The process would encompass "Section 13" assessments as well
<br />as other activities to provide needed coordination and timely compre-
<br />hensive reporting.
