<br />The Hammond proiect, located in -northwestern New Mexico, is.a substa:p.tially
<br />QQmpleted project. Operated.. and :maintained by the. Bureau, of. ,~eolamatioh
<br />through the 1965 irrigation season, the projeot supplied water to"pI:oject lands
<br />Qn a rental basis. The project-works consis~, of the Hammond diversion da'm on
<br />the San Juan River, the main gravity canal, a hydraulic turbine-driven,pumpihg
<br />plant, three main laterals, and..distribution, .laterals. Drainage facilities are ,being
<br />co:nstr1,1,c;ted as the need develops. , ".'. " <'.'
<br />After project canals were placed in operation, several reaches of canal.subsideq
<br />and structures settled out of l:ine. Constant surveillance and 'emergency, repairs
<br />have been underway as needed to keep water in the canals. and to continue water
<br />deliveries to lands which have, been planted.to crops. The problem is lesseI;ling as
<br />the ground settles. - , ' . ;
<br />The project will provide irrig~tion water for 3,900 acres, of which approximately
<br />2,150 acres are now irrigated. . The project lands are divided into 41 farms. .
