~~

~

-Total

537.800

Task 3. An evaluation of Colorado sauawfish recruitment.

Description of work:
Task 3 is an ongoing SDCR project being conducted by the FWS.
The Service's primary goal with this study is to determine
relative abundance of young Colorado squawfish in relation to
seasonal changes and river conditions, including variable flow
releases from Flaming Gorge Dam. Specific objectives of the
study include, determining behavioral patterns that influence
sampling bias; data gaps and future research needs.

An evaluation of existing information and field studies using
non-lethal marking of wild young Colorado squawfish from the
Ouray area in fall will be conducted to assess habitat use and
overwinter survival. Results will be used to prepare an issue
paper summarizing current knowledge, assessing effectiveness of
procedures for predicting overwinter survival relative to
different flow conditions, and identifying factors potentially
affecting the status of Colorado squawfish in the Green River
system. The study will help clarify how sampling bias and
behavioral patterns have affected results of past monitoring
studies and the impacts of spring runoff patterns on young
Colorado squawfish.

Deliverables:
The Service will submit an annual report by the end of the
fiscal year and a final report upon completion of the task_

Budget. :
-Labor
-Report

$23,700
$ 9,000

-Total

532.700

Task 4. Overwinter survival.

Description of work:
An ongoing SDCR project under the lead of the UDWR (funded by
RIP outside of Flaming Gorge Investigations in 1991). The
primary goal of this task is to gain an understanding of the
relationship between winter river discharges and other important
environmental variables and the survival of young fish
(particularly Colorado squawfishl in the Green River. The
specific objective of the task is to assess overwinter survival

'Does not include FWS overhead

B3
