':;')

have been developed from the recommendations provided by fishery and recreation
experts and subsequently refined based upon data gathered by the study team.
The purpose of the table is to display the major opportunities that appear to
have merit. and to present a relatively wide range of options to be selected
from during plan formulation in later tasks. Therefore, only a limited amount
of screening was performed prior to the preparation of Table S.3..

C.Q
c."
~

The streams and reservoirs presented in Table S.3 may be considered in
three major classifications:

1. Streams or reservoirs capable of supporting the development of prime
quality or trophy fisheries which will bring national publicity and
recognition to the study area.

2. Streams in good to excellent condition located on private lands where
all that is needed to develop a good recreation resource is to
provide for public access.

3. Streams and reservoirs on public or private lands where fishery and
recreation facility improvements can be used to increase fish
populations and provide additional recreational opportunities.

The study area is fortunate in having several waterbodies that fit the
first classification described above, including the Gunnison River below
Almont, the Taylor River below Taylor Dam, the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River,
and Blue Mesa Reservoir.

There are many locations that fit in the second classification including
the Gunnison River, East River, Taylor River, Tomichi Creek, Quartz Creek,
Marsha 11 Creek, Cochetopa Creek, Cebo 11 a Creek, the Lake Fork of the Gunn i son
River, and possibly the Uncompahgre River in .the future. In the case of
opening upa good fishery on private lands, the increment of fishing and
recreational use that could be obtained by providing public access would be
relatively large. At the same time, the. cost of providing good fishing to the
pUblic could be .relatively low because the only major costs would be those
associated with acquiring the access.

Numerous opportunities exist throughout the study area to improve
fisheries and recreation facilities on streams and reservoirs that fit in the

-6-
