The
operations show that some time during the recreation season, May
through September, the reservoir would have .been drawn down to
the inactive pool four times and would have raised into the flood
pool five of the study years. Nine years of the study period
showed water levels within the joint use pool.

Fluctuations of one to five feet within anyone year would have
occurred four times, fluctuations of six to ten feet were
indicated six times and those above eleven feet appeared in five
years of the study.

The reservoir would have operated 66 percent of the time during
the recreation season above elevation 4390 feet.

IV. DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA

The reservoir would be situated in the heavily timbered South
Platte River bottom. Unfortunately all trees would be inundated.
The river lies against the high banks of what will be the south
shore, and its multiple channels meander a course creating many
small, tree-covered islands. Flat, level ground is characteristic
of the north portion of the valley and reservoir drawdowns will
expose vast beaching areas on this side of the impoundment.

Farming operations are confined to the river bottom. Alfalfa,
corn and sugar beets are the predominant crops. High ground
away from the river is used for livestock grazing. Oil wells
are scattered throughout the vicinity.

Average annual precipitation at the reservoir site is about
14 inches. The temperature extremes vary from -38 to 100 degrees.
Prevailing winds generally blow from the northwest during the

6
