It is equal to the hydraulic conductivity
multiplied by the thickness of the zone of saturation. It is expressed as gallons per
day per foot.

waterspreaders - a specialized form of surface water irrigation accomplished by
diverting flood runoff from natural channels or watercourses and spreading the flow.
The diversion and spreading is controlled by a system of dams, structures, dikes or
ditches, or a combination thereof, designed to accommodate a calculated rate and
volume of flow. Little or no manual control is needed.

Water spreading differs from conventional irrigation in that the timing and
volume of water applied are not made according to the needs of the crop. The
timing and volume are dependent upon the nature of the surface water runoff and the
infiltration capacity of the soil. A cutoff date of June I was assumed for this study
in Colorado and Wyoming. In Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska,
waterspreading was continued through June.

water table - refers to the common boundary between the saturated and unsaturated
zones.

water yield - a term relating to the total surface and
particular land parcel over a specified period of time.
hydrologic effects of forest management practices.

ground water runoff from a
It is used in describing the

.

.

1-13
