reservoir inflow - a record of streamflow into any of the man-made reservoirs, given .
in acre-feet per month.

return flow - that portion of the water diverted for a beneficial use that returns to
the stream system for potential rediversion or instream uses.

return flow distribution pattern - a temporal pattern which distributes the total
return flow from a particular month's activity over the next 12 months on a monthly
percentage basis. [t recognizes that return flow is not instantaneous, but rather is
logged over a period of time.

response curve - is a curve showing the relation between pumping time and volume of
stream depletion.

rounding - the process of deleting the least significant digits of a numeric value and
adjusting the part that remains according to some rule.

~ - a single continuous series of operations of a computer program.

software - the computer programs or procedures concerned with the operation of a
data processing system.

specific yield of an aquifer - the change that occurs in the volume of water in
storage per unit area of unconfined aquifer as the result of a unit change in head,
expressed as a dimensionless ratio to the dewatered volume or the drainage porosity.

storage - pertaining to a device into which data can be entered, in which they can
be held, and from which they can be retrieved at a later time.

.

stream depletion - either a direct depletion of the stream or reduction of ground
water flow to the stream as a result of pumping a well in units of acre-feet.
a2s
stream depletion factor (SDF) - defined as 'I' ,which has a dimension of time
with "a" the distance from the well to the stream in feet, "5" the specific yield and
"T" the transmissivity. The SDF has a unit of time and is the result of analyzing
aquifer properties such as transmissivity, specific yield, and well location. When the
well is pumped continuously and when the volume of stream depletion reaches 28
percent of the total volume pumped, the pumping time would be approximately equal
to one sdf at the well.

subroutine - a part of a computer program.

surface water irrigation - irr iga tion utilizing water diverted by gravity systems,
pumped from lakes or streams, or supplied from surface reservoirs.

system - a group of interrelated or interacting elements that form a whole.

terraces - an earth embankment, a channel, or a combination ridge and channel
constructed across a slope.

test site - a specific location where classification techniques and ground truth .
information for a remote sensing study are evaluated and modified prior to
implementation of a larger scale operational study.

1-12
