,-.L.a.1

12

METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT

minimum, The shortage of generating capacity at Boulder Dam
will be relieved with the completion of unit N-7 which is expected
to be in operation in the summer of 1944.
Due to the limited operation and maintenance forces available
and the difficulty of recruiting skilled pumping plant operators
certain changes were made in the automatic protection devices and
the plants were run without attendants throughout two shifts
daily during operating periods. No difficulties were experienced
in this method of operation.
The following tauulation shows the hours of operation, the acre
feet of water pumped, and the energy used for pumping and camp
and station service in the fiscal year 1942-43, The energy shown
is part of that which was produced by generating units N-5 and
N-6 in the Boulder power plant assigned to serve the District.

Pl..'.:'\T
Inlakc .... ...... ...." .
Gene
Iron Mountain
Eagle Mounlain
Hayfield

PUMP HOURS
OF OPERATION

KWIlR FOil
Pl1:o.lP1NG

W..HER PUM"W
AcnE FEET

.... ...., ....2689,44
.... ...., ......2201.26
.... ...... ....,.1639.54
...........1606,76
"m.. 1545.50

16.047..\00
14.693.600
4.R14.800
14.194.0(J[l
B.952.000

47.507,7
42.995.9
29.187,9
27.817,1
26.108.0

To'a]

........ .9682,50

63.701,900

Energy Ils~d for pumping . .... ..... ..m. ..
Energy Il~f'd for camp and sI8lion l'f'nire 0"

KWHil
.. ..63.101.900
...., 2.4]].250

The No.2 discharge valve at Gene was taken out of service in
January 1943 and parts of the operating mechanism were shipped
to the manufacturer for reconstruction in order to remedy ,Iefeds
which had developed in operation. The work of cleaning and
re-enameling the electric motor coolers was completed at all plants.
The domestic water systems for the camps were overhauled and im-
provements made to provide more uniform operation of the water
softening equipmellt. A considerable amount of work was done in
making minor alterations at all plants to bring them into full
compliance with recent safety orders of the California Industrial
Accident Commission.
Labor turnover was relatively high and increasing difficulty was
experienced in making replacements. Operation of the mess halls
at Gene and Iron Mountain camps was continued throughout the
year under adverse conditions due to food rationing, curtailment
of delivery service, and unsatisfactory labor supply.

I
I
1
