... t'~,.. ........
" ... ..11)

CHAPTER 1

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

MAIN AQUEDUCT

I
Ii
I'

THE Intake pumping plant on the California shore of Lake
Havasu, approximately two miles upstream from Parker
Dam, is as its name implies the intake of the Colorado River
aqueduct system. The aqueduct system is made up of the main
aqueduct and the distribution facilities consisting of reservoirs,
pipe lines, and water softening plant. The main aqueduct termi-
nates 242 miles from Intake in Lake Mathews, which is the begin-
ning of distribution, Included in the main aqueduct are the five
pumping plants, the 230-kv transmission line bringing power from
Hoover Dam, the telephone lines, the reservoirs, tunnels, canals,
cut-and-cover conduits, inverted siphons, paved branch roads from
main highways to camps, and unpaved patrol roads, Construction
of the principal features of the mllin aqueduct was completed late
in 1939 and Colorado River water was first received at Lake
Mathews on November 2, 1939.
The original cost of the main aqueduct, the cost of additions and
betterments, and the net construction cost as of June 30, 1947 are
shown in table 2, These costs include preliminary organization alld
surveys, right of way and lands, construction utilities, Parker
Dam, and subsequent additi0ns and betterments charged to capita]
account. The net cost is after the deductions given in the table,

"

Tl"a,lIsmil:5sio/l- ii-ncs mul tde1Jho-ne system
There were no unscheduled interruptions of power due to causes
originating on the District system. Following the installation of
resistors in the 230-kv oil circuit breakers at Hoover Dam, the
breakers were tested 0n the District system and showed)mproved
performance in limiting the rise of voltage during switching opera-
tions, The District cooperated with the U, S. Bureau of Reclama-
tion in making short-circuit tests to determine the effectiveness of
the relaying plan now in operation on the District and Parker
transmission systems.
Interruptions and repairs of the telephone system for the year
were normal in number and extent.

[ 9 ]
