<br />l- . /' :: <br />~: 1. i..... ....1 <br /> <br />2 <br /> <br />METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT <br /> <br />The maximum monthly deliver,}' of Colorado River water in the <br />coastal area was 315 cubic feet per second, or 203 million gallons <br />per day in August 1952, and the minimum was 67 cubic feet per <br />second, or 43 million gallons per day in December 1952. <br /> <br />Co""rructioll <br /> <br />A $52,000,000 construction program was instituted in 1952 to <br />increase the aqueduct pumping plant capacity and to enlarge the <br />distribution facilities in order to keep ahead of the growing de, <br />mands for water service, Construction, materials, and equipment <br />contracts totaling $21,000,000 had been awarded at the end of the <br />fiscal year, and about $5,500,000 had been spent on the program, <br /> <br />Area, population, and assessed t'"/u,,tiO/1 <br /> <br />The inadequacy of local water resources in the south coastal area <br />of California to meet the needs of rapidly increasing population <br />and expanding industry, and in particular the unabated depletion <br />of the principal ground,water basins, have brought about intensified <br />activity directed toward annexation of additional territory to the <br />District, Completed during the fj"cal year were the annexation of <br />Foothill Municipal Water District as a unit constituent area of the <br />District, of Glendora and Rowland areas to Pomona Valley Munici, <br />pal Water District, and of Dominguez area to West Basin Municipal <br />Water District, all in Los Angeles County: annexation of South Bay <br />Irrigation District and certain other lands to San Diego County <br />Water Authority; and annexation of adjacent areas to Eastern <br />Municipal Water District in Riverside County, The total area of <br />these completed additions is 194 square miles, Central Basin Mu, <br />nicipal Water District was organized in Los Angeles County, and <br />progress was accomplished towal'd the formation of new municipal <br />water districts in the counties of Riverside, San Bernardino, and <br />San Diego, all with a view to subsequent annexation to the Metro, <br />politan Water District. Completion of all actively prospective <br />annexations would add approximately 1,200 square miles to the <br />corporate area of the District, which comprised in the aggregate <br />1750 square miles at the close of the fiscal year, <br />Population in all component areas of the District continued to <br />increase, as shown in table 1. There are 49 incorporated cities in <br />the five coastal counties plus large areas of unincorporated territory <br />now included in the District. <br />
