'1~r?r:6

Reclamation. Such notice shall be in the form prescribed
by the Bureau of Reclamation, and applicant shall keep such
records of water use as may be required by the Bureau of
Reclamation. ..

The permit is silent concerning water taken from wells to serve

Federal lands.

On December 31, 1963, the Land Use Office had entered into permits

covering most of the residential and commercial areas and 73

permits covering 5,544 acres of irrigated Federal land on about

35 percent of the total Federal land being farmed. The breakdown

of Federal land being farmed by States and acreage under permit is

shown in the enclosed Table III.

A concerted effort was made by this Department during the Fall of

1963 to initiate legal action to stop the installation of a large-

sized pump in the Colorado River to serve private lands then being

leveled and developed. The recommendation of the Department of

Justice was that institution of action on this case be withheld

pending issuance of the decree in Arizona v. California, et al,

which was then being prepared. The decree was issued March 9,

1964, and shortly thereafter, the Department of the Interior again

requested the Department of Justice to file action to prevent fur-

ther diversion of Colorado River water by the party under consider-

ation in 1963.

4
