Climate

The climate within the study area is dominated by Pacific

I

frontal systems and local thunderstorms.

Precipitation varies from 25 inches per year in the vicinity

of Commissary Park upwards to 45+ inches per year a top

Black Mountain and at the headwaters of the Main and West

Forks. Depending upon elevation, 55% to 75% of this
precipitation is in the form of snow. Snow can be expected
anytime after Labor Day and will usually remain on the study

area until late May. Mid-winter snow accumulations ave~age

six to seven feet in depth.

The mean annual temperature averages 33-45 degrees (F) with

temperature extremes ranging from -45 degrees (F) to 90 degrees

(F) .

The dominant wind directions are from the southwest, west and

northwest. The Continental Divide and other high north-south

ridges protect the study area from extremely high winds.
