Geology

Fossil deposits within the study area are rare thus the geology

within the area has been determined to be precambrian. The

geologic terrain is a discordant series of precambrian igneous,

metaigneous and metasedimentary crystalline rocks.

With the exception of glacial action, geologic processess are

not very evident to the casual visitor.

Glacial action in the form of glacial erosion and deposits,
as evidenced by cirques, glacial troughs, V-shaped valleys,

I

kettles, moraines etc., is found near the headwaters of the

Main Fork and to a lesser extent the West Fork. Glacial

action is also evident on the northern slopes of Black

Mountain, and in and near Commissary Park.

Alluvium and colluvium deposits are predominant along the

Main Fork, West Fork and the tributaries flowing from the

Stump Park area. These deposits are also in evidence through-
out Commissary Park.

The remainder of the study area is underlain with igneous
and metamorphic rock.
