.

I

..1 f .. f
'!~f;t'i!ate an increase in natural reproduction in the l4-mile
reach of the Fryingpan River below the dam, such that it
should be managed as a wild trout fishery.

(14) The Rocky Fork Campground immediately below Ruedi
Dam was destroyed by construction of Ruedi Dam and Reservoir.
The campground consisted of four family units, a water system,
and sanitary facilities.

(l5) An archeological survey was conducted at Ruedi Reservoir
by the University of Denver's Department of Anthropology in
June 1963. Six sites produced identifiable artifacts, but
these archeological materials were very limited, and it was
recommended that no further work be performed. Four of these
sites were inundated by the reservoir.

.

(16) The construction of Ruedi Dam required the acquisition
of the Ruedi-Smith Creek range allotment in the White River
National Forest. This allotment totaled 7,062 acres and
produced 133 animal use months (ADM's) of forage annually.
The 798 acres of private land used in connection with this
land was acquired as recreational lands. A total of 900
acres of private rangelands were taken out of forage produc-
tion for livestock. In addition, 370 acres of private irri-
gated land in production of alfalfa and other tame hay were
removed from cultivation.

(17) Ruedi Reservoir, and its associated recreation facili-
ties, accommodated between 60 and 70 percent of the visitor-
day recreation use in the Fryingpan River drainage between
1970 and 1972. Ruedi Reservoir generated 49l,347 visitor
days between the years of 1970 through 1974.

b. Unique Impacts

(1) Initial studies conducted on the l4-mile section of the
Fryingpan River below Ruedi Dam indicated that this section
is still one of the most productive in the State (Colorado
Division of Wildlife, 1972). Ruedi Dam allows control of the
Fryingpan River below the damsite. Controlled flows have
(1) increased success of spawning, (2) caused plant cover
to become more permanently established, and (3) stabilized
water quality and temperatures except for normal seasonal
changes. Stream temperatures for approximately 2 miles
below the dam have been stabilized as a result of dam
operations. Summer temperatures are an average 120 F cooler
and winter temperatures are warmer than before construction.

.

IV-54
