I
1- .

I! .. 3r.
':1'1',",

.

.

, .

A letter from the Colorado State Historical Society dated
December 20, 1972, has further identified the abandoned
CF&I conduit and the log and rock masonry cabin (Daughen-
bauh House) as having historical aignificance, but not
being eligible for the National Register. The leg and reck
cabin had been vandalized so extensively prior to Reclamation
obtaining the property that it has been determined infeasible
to attempt to preserve it (CSHS, letter dated August 7, 1973).
A segment of the CF&I Arkansas Valley Conduit will be
preserved at the request of the Colorado State Historical
Society (letter dated August 7, 1973). The cemetery
located within the flood pool has been relocated above
the high watermark.

No structures were preserved in the Swallows community.
The structures were all in an advanced state of deteriora-
tion, most represented only by foundations. The two ranch
properties identified as important, the Goodnight Ranch head-
quarters and the remains attributed to the J. C. Teller ranch
(Withers and Huffman, 1966), are located outside the take
line of Pueblo Reservoir and will not be affected by the
Project. The concrete barrier dam has been inundated by
the waters of Pueblo Reservoir.

Portions of the alinement of the Mt. Elbert Conduit where it
coincides with the previously proposed Mt. Elbert Canal
alinement, have been surveyed for archeological and historical
resources. No sites have been located on the portions of
the conduit surveyed. Additional inventory work is under
contract along with evaluation of the significance of any
properties located. A determination of the impact of this
feature of the Project On archeological and historical
resources is dependent on the outcome of the studies in
progress. No archeological or historical sites were located
at the site of the associated Halfmoon Diversion Dam (Buckles,
1972).

Construction activities associated with Mt. Elbert Pumped-
Storage Powerplant and Forebay have destroyed two of the
six archeological sites identified within the Mt. Elbert
Forebay. All of these sites were investigated prior to
construction by Southern Colorado State College (Buckles,
1972). No further studies of any of the six sites were
recommended.

Archeological and historical surveys have been accomplished
as part of the preliminary studies for the Twin Lakes dam
and reservoir enlargement. Seven archeological sites and six
areas of historic interest have been identified within the
proposed Project take line.
