I
I

3. RESOURCES

I

This chapter discusses the major physical resources which would be involved

in the Lake Andes-Wagner Unit. Further details and other resources are

discussed in the chapter "Affected Environment and Environmental Consequences."

I
I

Water

Project Supply

I
I
I
I

Lake Andes-Wagner Unit will be supplied with water pumped from Lake Francis

Case, the reservoir formed by Fort Randall Dam on the Missouri River.

Lake Francis Case has a maximum capacity of 5,603,000 acre-feet at eleva-

tion 1375 feet (the top of the spillway gates) and a normal maximum of

4,619,000 acre-feet at elevation 1365 feet. During years of average or

normal flow, the water surface elevation will range between 1335 and 1365.

The annual flow of the river at the dam has averaged 25,380 ft3/s or

18,360,000 acre-feet for the period 1947 through 1980. The flow varied

from 100 ft3/s on March 29, 1962, to 447,000 ft3/s on April 12, 1952.

I
I
I
I
I

The nearest surface water quality station for the Missouri River is at

Fort Randall Dam. A period of record retrieval showed the following

chemical characteristics:

USGS Station 06453000, Missouri River
at Fort Randall, for Period of Record
1974-1982
(Values in mg/l)

I

Mean Minimum Maximum
Ca 60 52 67
Mg 23 11 28
Na 72 57 88
K 5 2 14
HC03 190 110 232
S04 223 180 290
Cl 11 6 22
TDS 502 431 594

I
I
I
I

7
