boundary of the Fort Randall CQnservsncy~ubdistrict (see Map 642-600-53)
and now lies within the Southern Missouri ,Water Development District.

I
I

Because of the large size of ~he study area, the focus of the

Lower James-Fort Randall Water Diversion Proposal was on those areas for

which there was strong local support. The feedback from meetings with

various segments of the public indicated possible interest in' the Lake

Andes-Wagner Unit, Tower Unit, Greenwood Unit, Lower James Area, and

Davison County Area. Subsequent examination of these five areas revealed

that further study was not warranted for the Lower James or Davison County

Areas, primarily because of an inadequate water supply in the James River.

Further study was warranted for the Tower and Greenwood Units and for the

Lake Andes-Wagner Unit. Detailed investigations for the Tower and

Greenwood Units have been completed and are being reported separately.

I

I
I

Plan formulation studies for lands west of Choteau Creek were completed in

April 1983. A field review draft of the Planning Report/Draft

Environmental Statement for the project' lands west of Choteau Creek was

circulated for review in October 1983. S4bsequent1y, planning studies for

lands east of Choteau Creek have been completed (See Plan Formulation).

This report summarizes the studies for the entire 45,000-acre project.

I
I
I
I
I

I

Locat ion

The project area is located" in southeaste~n South Dakota in Charles Mix

County. The Lake Andes-Wagner Unit lies primarily on an upland plain, east

of the Missouri River, approximately 15 miles northeast of Fort Randall Dam

which forms Lake Francis Case. The unit area is bisected by Choteau Creek

from north to south. Lake Andes, a large ,natural intermittent lake, is

situated in the northwest part of the project.

I

I

I
I

Public Invo1v~ment

I

Public involvement for the :,study included, ,tocal people in ,and ar;ound the
project area, the Lake Andes-Wagner Irrigation District, the
.
