A
large array of specific agricultural and irrigation management practices and
technologies have been investigated for their relevance to the objectives of
the High Plains-Ogallala Aquifer Regional Resources Study. The potential for
each practice or technology to contribute to improved water use management
and water demand reductions in any part of the High Plains study area are
assessed.

A high degree of specialization among agricultural researchers and
others involved in the many separate aspects of water conservation, irriga-
tion/agricultural management, and related topics required both acquisition
of substantial documentation (the current state-of-the-art literature) and
personal discussions with many of the researchers and practicioners in the
field.

The High Plains Study is indebted to a great many individuals and orga-
nizations who gave generously of both their time and knowledge. Some of the
organizations and agencies whose assistance is gratefully acknowledged are
represented in each of the six study states and to single them out would be
unnecessarily repetitious. The following agencies/organizations in each
state were contacted with specific requests for help, and each responded
generouSly:

1. State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation
Service Offices

2. State Cooperative Agricultural Extension Services

3. State Agricultural Experiment Stations and affiliated USDA
Research Stations

4. State Water Resources Research Institutes

xvii
