Each contract is for

four years.

Contracts with six other districts in Maricopa and Pinal counties

were approved by the CAWCD board earlier this year.
The Contracts require the CAWCD to buy the water from the
U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for $38 per af. In turn, the districts

contract to pay a share of that cost to CAWCD. Some of

the districts are paying through power exchange agreements, others

pay $13 per af.

In exchange for supplying the in-lieu water, the CAWCD through

permits issued by the Department of Water Resources, receives the

right to pump groundwater when water is needed by CAWCD customers.

The contracts provide CAWCD an opportunity to recover stored

water when a shortage of water exists on the Colorado River or when

the CAP is closed for repairs.
In accordance with the state law, the CAWCD can recover by

pumping up to 95% of the in-lieu water it supplies.

-more-
