Block, Secretary
U.S. Department of Agriculture
Washington, D.C. 20250

For information contact: Richard Woodrow, Forest Supervisor
White River National Forest
P.O" Box 948
Glenwood Springs, CO 81601.
303-945-6582

The proposed a'rition recollll1ends a land use allocation for an 8.000 acre .
Congressional1\y c1esignated study area known as the Spruce Creek Additi.on. It
also discloses, lt~epotentia1 for wilderness declassification of an adjacent .
5.500 acreport'idnof the existing Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness known as the:
Deadman Projec~1ion. Both areas were included in the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilder~ess
Study Area rev~rewed by congress in 1978, but the Spruce Creek Area was excluded
frORl wildernessl d~signation because of its potential for use for other resou~ce
purposes. Both( areas are located. in northeastern Pitkin County, Colorado, i .
9.5 miles nort~~a$t of the Town of Aspen.. . .

The proposed action and alternatives to it are:

1. No ActiOn. (continuation of present management) for the Spruce Creek.
Area. aria coniinl~ed wil derne5s status for the Deadman Projecti on.

. .
This aher, native continues p~esent management practices in both the
Spruce:ClreekArea and the Deadman Projection. The area would be i.
managed;to maintain its existing wilderness character and potential
for inq'usion in the National Wilderness Preservation System until
CongresS determfnes otherwise.

2. Wildern,~ss designation for the Spruce Creek Area and continued.
wilderness status of the Deadman Projection. (Proposed Action)

The pro~os,ed act,ionrecornri1ends wilderness de~ignation for the 8,000
acre Spl1uceCreek Area and continued wilderness status for the 5,500
acreDe~ctman Projection. The Spruce Creek Area would probably become
part of; the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness.

ii

" ~ ;-
Uj~., .,

I

\. :1~
!: li~
!~1

: ;'~'.
i;'~
;- ~).
;K
; ~
, ~
; -~:
f. ~
l ~
i 11
;: Z
!~
~ -~
iJ
.

Ji
..
I
II
j ..
