Abstract:

This Environme!l.tal Impact Statement considers six alternative land allocatio~s
for the Spruce, Creek Addition Wilderness Study Area and the adjacent Deadman'
Projection of the existing Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness. The alternatives ar~:

1. No Act1~n (co~tlnuation of present management) for the Spruce Creet
Area and contlnued wilderness status for the Deadman Projection.

2. Wilderrl~s$ designation for the Spruce Creek Area and continued
wilderness status for the Deadman Projection. (Proposed Action)

3, Nonwllclerness. al.location for the Spruce Creek Area and continued
wildern'ess status for the Deadman Projection.

4. Partial' wilderness/partial nonwilderness allocation for the Spruce
Creek Area< and continued wilderness status for the Deadman Projection;

5. Nonwilderness allocation for the Spruce Creek Area and declassifica-
tion of<~he Deadman Projection as wilderness.

The Forest ServiQe's preferred alternative is Alternative 2. It is also the .
environmentally preferable alternative because it will allow the natural processes
to continue wit~'lfmited management.

This Final Environmental Impact Statement contains material which updates and
supplements the praft Environmental Impact Statement, and the comments
received on the anternatives and the responses to those comments. The addi-
tions are minor Orlddo not change the alternatives or the analysis presented
in the DEIS. Co"~equently, to reduce paperwork, changes to the DEIS are
attached and cir~~lated (40 CFR 1500.4(m) and 1503.4(c)). Copies of the. Draft
EnvirQnmentalImi?ct Statement can be obtained from the Supervisor, White
River National Forest,Glenwood Springs, CO 81601.
