000259

wilderness. The organizations recommend these enclaves be
eliminated and the area added to the proposed wilderness unit.

A rough sketch map was presented by the Wilderness Society, and
a more precise map by the Sierra Club, Southwest Representative.
The boundaries shown are identical; however, the total acreage
differs, with the former showing 10,000 acres and the latter
indicating 10,500 acres. The maps submitted with the proposals are
included in the official record. The additions proposed are shown
generally by the letter "X" in Exhibit D.

National Parks and Conservation Association Recommendation
The National Parks and Conservation Association recommends that
wilderness status be assigned to the entire road less area of 10,500
acres, plus some outlying areas flanking the roads.

Society of American Foresters, Rocky Mountain Section
Recommendation
This professional society supports the National Park Service
proposal except for the enclaves and corridors.

Montrose County Chamber of Commerce Recommendation
This organization indicated they have no specific objection to the
proposed wilderness designation; however, they believe that the
wilderness area should be confined to the canyon area lying
between the North and South Rims.

Paonia Chamber of Commerce Recommendation
This organization indicated that "Black Canyon is not desirable to
be made into a wilderness area." They suggest that a tramway be
built into the canyon and that a bridge be constructed across the
canyon so that "younger people and the aged might better view
the sights."

Endorsing Agencies
The following governmental agencies endorsed the National Park
Service proposal in its entirety:

Bureau of Reclamation, Grand Junction, Colorado

Colorado Game, Fish and Parks Commission, Denver,
Colorado.

19
