000251

13

wilderness. No change resulted in the total wilderness acreage, since
this addition was counterbalanced by a recommended deletion, as
discussed below.

RECOMMENDED DELETION

Since the SY,SW%SW% sec. 4, T. 49 N., R. 7 W. remains
withdrawn for reclamation purposes, the proposed wilderness
boundary in this location was revised accordingly. This revision
resulted in certain small parcels, collectively shown as Area D on
Exhibit B, being recommended for deletion from the proposed
wilderness. No change in total wilderness acreage resulted because
of the effect of the addition noted above.

OTHER AREAS RECONSIDERED

The 1/8-mile-wide management zone lying between the proposed
wilderness and monument boundary was opposed, with the
suggestion that the area be added to the wilderness. This addition
is not recommended because, as stated in the preliminary
wilderness proposal, the 1/8.mile-wide management zone along the
boundary is considered the minimum essential for present and
future management needs.

,;

~

SUMMATION

A more precise measurement of the area involved in the
preliminary wilderness proposal indicates the proposed wilderness
unit to be e645 acres, rather than the 9600 acres originally stated.
With the recommended 135 acres of wilderness added to the
8645-acre area of the preliminary wilderness proposal, the total
recommended wilderness is increased to 8780 acres.

4

Director, National Park Service
