<br />, , <br /> <br />000249 <br /> <br />11 <br /> <br />CONCLUSIONS <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />As required by the Wilderness Act, public hearings were held on <br />the preliminary wilderness proposal at Montrose, Colorado, on <br />December 3, 1970, and at Gunnison, Colorado, on December 5, <br />1970. Notice of the hearings appeared in the Federal Register on <br />September 30, 1970, and in newspapers representing Montrose, <br />Gunnison, Delta, Hotchkiss, Fruita, and Grand Junction, <br />Colorado - all of these in the general locality of the Black Canyon <br />of the Gunnison National Monument. One hundred twenty-one <br />people were present at the two hearings, 28 of whom made oral <br />statements. Two hundred twenty-three letters were received. <br /> <br />Of the agencies, private organizations, and individuals testifying or <br />submitting written views, two of the 13 public agencies, five of the <br />37 private organizations, and 47 of the 263 individuals supported the <br />
