water resources for the economic growth of the State while maintaining overall

environmental integrity.

SOUTH DAKOTA

The South Dakota water planning process is designed to provide a dynamic

information base, an identification of water related issues and recommendations

for managing the development and conservation of water and related land

resources of the State. The three major areas involved in the planning process

are:

a. Computerized Natural Resources Inventories; the first step in the
statewide water resources planning process is to develop a

comprehensive computerized inventory of South Dakota's resources.

This computer system would be a dynamic inventory which would
eventually provide a comprehensive data base of South Dakota's

natural resources.

b. Statewide Water Plan; the statewide water plan is an aggregation of

all existing water resources projects and water resources projects

that are proposed for the future in the State of South Dakota. Its

purpose is to coordinate management of the State's water and related
land resources.
c. State Water Resources Management System; the State water resources
management system consists of those parts of the statewide water plan

established by the legislature as a needed objective for water

resources management in South Dakota and for which the legislature
may authorize construction and financing in whole or in part. The
system's purpose is to provide the means for the planning, funding
and construction of a State water resources management system for the

State of South Dakota.

G-6
