002530

REPORT OF COLORADO RIVER COMMISSION OF NEVADA

11

The Colorado River Commission was created in 1935 by an act of the State
Legislature (NRS 538.040 to NRS 538.260). The commission was charged
with the responsibility to represent the State of Nevada in negotiations and
representations to bring to the State the maximum water and power benefits
from the Colorado River. The commission was further charged with the
responsibility to receive, protect, safeguard, and hold in trust for the State
of Nevada all water and water rights in and to the waters of the Colorado
River. The original composition of the commission consisted of the Gover-
nor of the State and four commissioners appointed by him. In 1963 an
amendment to the enabling legislation replaced the Governor as a member
of the commission with the Director of the Department of Conservation and
Natural Resources.
The commission's responsibilities were extended by the enactment of the
Eldorado Valley Development Law (NRS 321.390 to 321.470) in 1957 and
by the Fort Mohave Development Law (NRS 321.480 to 321.536) in 1959.
Under these two acts the commission was charged for procuring from the
United States the development and disposition of 105,000 acres in Eldorado
Valley and 15,000 acres in the Fort Mohave area.

f:
