Description of proposed action: The following is a summary of the proposed
action, for further details see attached augmentation proposal, incorporated
herein by reference.

Razorback sucker are native to the San Juan River; however, the species is at
present extremely rare in the San Juan. Experimental stockings of razorback
sucker in 1994, 1995, and 1996 have yielded data to document the ability of
stocked fish to find suitable habitat and survive in the San Juan River. Thus,
the Service has defined the following goals for work to be conducted from
Fiscal Year 1997 through Fiscal Year 2001:

A. Determine the viability of a full-scale augmentation effort for
razorback sucker in the San Juan River.

B. Accomplish objectives outlined in the San Juan River Long Range
Plan--
5.1.2 Establish razorback sucker population goals
5.3.8 Implement an augmentation program for razorback sucker
5.3.8.2 Develop augmentation plan for razorback sucker

To achieve the goals listed above, the objectives of the augmentation plan are:

A. Determine habitat use and needs, site preference, and movement
patterns of hatchery-reared razorback sucker in the wild.

B. Determine survival rates and growth rates of hatchery-reared, known-
age razorback sucker in the wild.

C. Determine whether hatchery-reared razorback sucker will recruit into the
adult population and successfully spawn in the wild.

2
